Celebrating National Dinosaur Day with AI Art

[Written by ChatGPT. Main image: “An artistic reinterpretation of the National Dinosaur Day celebration with dinosaurs living together in harmony, digital art,” SDXL]

June 1, 2023, is National Dinosaur Day (yes, it’s also celebrated on the third Tuesday in May; confusing, we know!). To mark this occasion, we embarked on an exciting journey through time and space with our AI-powered image generator, DreamStudio, and some prehistoric friends!

We set out to generate scenes featuring different dinosaur species in various scenarios, using three different versions of DreamStudio: Stable Diffusion (SD) 1.5, 2.1, and XL. The goal was to gauge the AI’s capacity to accurately and creatively render these scenes, reflecting the dynamism and diversity of the Mesozoic era. Our judgement was based on five criteria: accuracy, environmental consistency, artistic quality, creativity, and completeness.

The Experiment

We used ten unique prompts, each featuring a different dinosaur species in a distinct situation. For example, we prompted DreamStudio to depict “a scene of a Tyrannosaurus Rex hunting in a dense prehistoric forest” and “a Spinosaurus catching a large prehistoric fish in a fast-flowing river.”

The Results

Now, let’s dig into what we unearthed!

[Left to right: SD 1.5, 2.1, XL]

[A scene of a Tyrannosaurus Rex hunting in a dense prehistoric forest.]

[An image of a peaceful herd of Triceratops grazing in a meadow at dusk.]

[A Velociraptor engaged in a territorial dance-off.]

[A group of Pteranodons flying over a vast ocean with a prehistoric island in the background.]

[A curious Diplodocus stretching its long neck to reach the top branches of a giant conifer tree.]

[A pack of Deinonychus hunting a Tenontosaurus in a Cretaceous swamp.]

[An Ankylosaurus in a defensive posture, protecting its young from a predator.]

[A bird’s eye view of a massive herd of Sauropods migrating across an open plain.]

[A close-up of a Parasaurolophus, showing its distinctive crest.]

[A Spinosaurus catching a large prehistoric fish in a fast-flowing river.]

Accuracy & Environmental Consistency: The experiment yielded some interesting results. In terms of accuracy, DreamStudio managed to generate well-done images of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Diplodocus, Ankylosaurus, and Sauropods. However, Triceratops’ horns were depicted in the wrong orientation, and the depiction of Parasaurolophus and Spinosaurus were incorrect, albeit interesting. The Velociraptors were well-rendered, although SDXL interestingly gave them the ability to fly. Deinonychus images were acceptable, with the exception of some unusual creature fusion by SD 1.5.

Concerning environmental consistency, it’s worth noting that the depicted vegetation didn’t seem fully accurate for the eras these dinosaurs inhabited, though we must confess we’re not paleobotany experts.

Artistic Quality: Despite the issues with accuracy, the artistic quality of the images was consistently pleasing across the different versions of DreamStudio. The AI handled color, texture, and composition well, providing an appealing aesthetic experience.

Creativity & Completeness: Creativity-wise, the AI played it safe. The scenes generated were relatively predictable, adhering closely to the prompts without many unexpected or unique interpretations. Completeness varied, but SDXL deserves a special mention for pushing the envelope with a Diplodocus in a tree.

Conclusion

While our AI art experiment had its share of paleontological mishaps, it offered us a unique opportunity to visualize a bygone era and its magnificent creatures, courtesy of artificial intelligence. We were reminded that while AI has come a long way, there are still some learning opportunities, especially when it comes to rendering the intricate details of our prehistoric past.

In the end, we enjoyed our virtual Jurassic journey. We invite you to judge the images for yourself and share your views on DreamStudio’s dinosaur artistry. After all, on National Dinosaur Day, we’re all paleontologists at heart!
